Abstract

Based on a basic qualitative design, this qualitative study revealed social media's impact on students' self-esteem. Basic qualitative research is characterized by its exploratory nature, focusing on understanding phenomena through participant perspectives and experiences without imposing predefined categories or theories. This study investigates students’ attitudes towards social media and how it affects their self-esteem. Seven (7) students from the Grade 10 batch of Bacolod Trinity Christian School S.Y 2023-2024 were selected to participate in this study. The interviews were semi-structured and conducted individually in a face-to-face setting. The findings revealed both positive impacts of social media such as sharing information and connecting with other people, and negative effects including anxiety, feelings of depression, and tendencies of self-comparisons. The research showed that: (1) Social Media influences students’ self-esteem. (2) Breaks in using Social Media help students’ well-being. (3) Social Media provides students with feedback (positive and negative) that affects their self-esteem. (4) Students tend to follow specific groups of people on Social Media. (5) Students use common apps daily for communication. In conclusion, social media can have both benefits and challenges. Through an in-depth exploration grounded in participant perspectives, this research provides valuable insights into the ongoing issues surrounding social media's impact on individuals' psychological well-being.
